Echinopsis schaeferi f. monstrosa ‘Enigma’ (WA Prohibited)

Echinopsis schaeferi ‘Enigma’ Montrose is a compact monstrose mutation forming tight clusters of irregular, knobbly growth. Unlike the standard ribbed species, this clone develops sculptural, unpredictable forms while retaining the species’ bright yellow flowers when mature.

Previously circulated under Trichocereus schaeferi and occasionally mislabelled in cultivation.

Care

  • Light: Bright light to full sun. Acclimate gradually to prevent sunburn.
  • Water: Allow the mix to dry between watering. Reduce watering significantly in winter.
  • Temperature: Protect from frost. Prefers warm, dry conditions with airflow.
  • Media: Free-draining cactus mix with added mineral content.
  • Feeding: Light feeding during active growth in spring and summer.

Key Characteristics

  • Growth Habit: Montrose / monstrose irregular clustering form
  • Structure: Distorted, knobbly segments rather than clean ribs
  • Spines: Short, scattered spines from white areoles
  • Flower: Bright yellow, species-typical bloom
  • Flowering Season: Late spring to summer (when mature)
  • Mature Size: Forms compact sculptural clumps over time
