Sulcorebutia candiae
Sulcorebutia candiae, is a miniature cactus species native to the high-altitude regions of Bolivia. It typically forms small, flattened, spherical stems with a sandy beige to light brown epidermis, giving rise to its association with the name arenacea. The stems are covered with short, fine, closely spaced spines that lie flat against the surface. In late spring to early summer, the plant produces bright orange to reddish-orange funnel-shaped flowers, which can be almost as large as the body, often appearing in a ring near the base.
Care Tips:
- Light: Requires bright light with several hours of direct sun each day to maintain compact growth and encourage flowering.
- Water: Water well during the active growing season, allowing the mix to dry completely between waterings; keep almost dry in winter.
- Humidity: Prefers low humidity and good airflow.
- Media: Use a very free-draining cactus mix with added mineral grit or pumice.
- Temperature: Keep above 5°C during winter; tolerates brief light frosts if kept dry.
- Fertiliser: Apply a diluted, low-nitrogen cactus fertiliser monthly during growth.
- Repotting: Repot every 2–3 years to refresh the soil and maintain root health.
