Cymbidium Sarah Jean 'Green & Gold'

Cymbidium Sarah Jean 'Green & Gold'

Cymbidium Sarah Jean 'Green & Gold' is a selected cultivar from the Sarah Jean grex, a cross between Cymbidium floribundum and Cymbidium Sleeping Beauty. This cultivar is valued for its arching sprays of small flowers, typically produced in abundance. The blooms are yellow-green with golden tones and a contrasting lip, making it one of the best-known forms of the grex. Plants usually flower in late winter to spring, with spikes carrying many blooms at once, often cascading gracefully from the foliage.

Compact in growth compared to many standard Cymbidiums, this cultivar is well suited to pot culture. It inherits free-flowering traits from its parentage, producing multiple spikes on mature plants. Like others in the grex, it performs best under cool to intermediate conditions with good light and regular feeding.

Care Tips

  • Light: Bright, filtered light; some direct morning sun helps to encourage flowering.
  • Water: Keep evenly moist during the active growing period; reduce slightly after flowering but never let the mix dry completely.
  • Media: Use a coarse, free-draining Cymbidium mix such as medium-grade bark with added perlite or charcoal.
  • Fertiliser: Feed regularly with a balanced orchid fertiliser every 2-3 weeks in growth; switch to a bloom booster as spikes begin to form.
  • Temperature: Best with cool nights (around 10-12 °C) and warmer days up to 25 °C; this diurnal range helps initiate spikes.
  • Repotting: Repot every 2-3 years in spring after flowering, when new shoots are just starting to develop.
