Agave stricta Nana

Agave stricta Nana

Agave stricta 'Nana' is a compact cultivated form of the Mexican species Agave stricta, naturally found in Puebla and Oaxaca where it inhabits arid slopes and rocky plains. This miniature selection develops dense, spherical rosettes of narrow, rigid leaves that end in a short spine. The rosettes stay much smaller than the species, generally remaining under 20 cm across, which makes it well suited for container culture. Like the species, mature plants may eventually produce a tall flowering stalk bearing small reddish to purple flowers, after which the rosette dies back.

Care Tips

  • Light: Prefers full sun to maintain compact, symmetrical rosettes.
  • Water: Very drought tolerant; water sparingly and let the soil dry completely between waterings.
  • Media: Requires a sharply draining, sandy or gritty mix to prevent root rot.
  • Fertiliser: Feed lightly during warm months with a low-nitrogen cactus fertiliser.
  • Temperature: Tolerates mild frosts but should be sheltered from prolonged freezing conditions.
  • Repotting: Repot infrequently, only when plants become rootbound or offsets need separating.

Additional Notes

  • Known to be toxic
